**Do you speak cuttlefish? 🦑〰️👀** Cuttlefish don’t use words, but they may have surprisingly rich communication signals displayed across their **skin, posture and arms**. They can rapidly change color, pattern and body shape. And during my research, I discovered another intriguing signal: **stereotyped “arm wave” signs** : distinctive movements of the arms that cuttlefish produce during social interactions. 〰️ An arm rises. ↔️ It sweeps sideways. 🔄 It rolls or goes upwards. 🔄Arms make a crown. These movements aren’t just random motion. Our experiments suggest that other cuttlefish can **detect and respond to these visual signals**, opening the possibility that arm waves form part of a previously overlooked communication system. We are only beginning to decipher what these animals are saying.
